Essential Jewelry Making Tools: Complete Checklist
Walk into a craft store’s jewelry aisle and you can spend $90 before lunch on a 46 piece kit, then get home and discover that four of the pieces are useful and the other forty-two will spend the next decade in a drawer. That is the normal way people buy jewelry making tools, and it is the most expensive way to do it.
This list is the other way around. It starts with the five tools that do almost all of the work, then adds tools only when a technique needs them, and finishes with three kit builds at real prices. Every tool here has a job, a price, and a note on where it breaks. Nothing is included because it looks good in a photograph of a bench.
Summary: what you actually need
- Three tools cover most of the craft. Chain nose pliers, round nose pliers and micro-shear flush cutters. Everything else is technique specific.
- Smooth jaws are the whole point. Hardware store pliers have teeth. Teeth gouge soft wire and leave marks you cannot remove. A nylon-jaw pair takes the idea to its logical end, with jaws that have no teeth at all.
- Buy the cutters and pliers at mid tier. Around $22 for cutters and $24 for pliers. A $22 cutter that lasts four years costs $5.50 a year. The $8 one that dies in six months costs $16.
- A real stringing kit is about $149. Adding wire work brings it to $295. A full metal bench with a torch, saw and rotary tool lands near $778.
- No torch required. Stringing, bead weaving, wire wrapping and chain maille are all cold work. Most sellers never light one.
- Practice in copper. It behaves like sterling and costs a fifth as much.

How to use this checklist
Tool lists fail in a predictable way. They show you every tool that exists, you buy half of them, and then you discover that the twelve you bought serve four different techniques and no single technique has a complete set. So this is a list of jewelry making tools sorted by what you are making, not by price or by what looks good in a photo of somebody else’s bench.
Start at section two and stop when you hit the end of your technique. If you are stringing bracelets, you need sections two through six and then you are done, and the total is under $140. If you are soldering rings, you need most of the list.
Two rules that hold everywhere:
- Buy for the technique you are doing this month, not the one you admire on Instagram. Tools go on sale forever. The wire wrapping kit will exist next year.
- Cheap and value are not the same. Cheap is a price. Value is cost divided by how long the thing lasts, and on that measure most jewelry tools are cheapest in the middle of the price range. The numbers are in section sixteen.
Prices in this guide are US retail observed in 2026, rounded to the nearest dollar. Brand names appear where they are the recognized standard, not as an endorsement. You do not need the brand. You need the feature the brand is known for, and each entry says what that feature is.
The five pliers that do most of the work
Ask any working jeweler which tool they would grab if the bench were on fire and it is always pliers. There are dozens of specialty shapes, but five cover nearly all cold work, and two of those five do about eighty percent of it.

Buy two of the first pair
This is the single most repeated piece of advice in jewelry making and the one beginners ignore most. Opening a jump ring correctly means holding one side in each hand and twisting sideways, so the ring opens along its own plane and springs back closed. Pulling the ends apart with one pair of pliers distorts the ring into an oval that never quite closes again.
That means two pairs of chain nose pliers, or one chain nose and one flat nose. They need to be the same make if you can manage it, because jaw shape and spring tension differ between brands and your hands learn one set.
Box joint against lap joint
A lap joint is two flat halves pinned through the middle, which is cheaper and goes out of alignment as the pin wears. A box joint has one half slotted through the other, which keeps the jaws aligned under load. On pliers you will use for years, box joint is worth the extra money, and you can tell the difference by looking at the hinge: a box joint has a visible step, a lap joint looks like two flat plates laid over each other.
The teeth test. Run a fingernail over the inside of the jaw. If you feel ridges, the pliers are for plumbing, not jewelry. Teeth exist to grip pipe. On 20 gauge dead soft copper they leave a pattern that survives filing, sanding and polishing.
Cutting tools: shears, cutters and the saw
Cutting is where cheap tools do the most damage, because a bad cut is not just ugly, it is sharp. A wire end left with a burr on a bracelet will scratch the wearer and snag a sweater, and no amount of finishing hides it.
Micro-shear flush cutters
Ordinary diagonal cutters work like scissors in reverse: two bevels pinch the wire and deform it into a point. Flush cutters have one flat blade and one beveled blade, so the wire is sliced and one side comes off flat.
The practical detail that nobody mentions and everybody needs: the flat side of the blade faces the part you keep. Cut the other way around and you leave the burr on the piece and throw the clean end in the bin. The Xuron 2175 Maxi-Shear is the standard reference at around $22 to $26 and handles soft wire up to about 18 gauge, with some makers using it comfortably on 12 gauge copper.
What kills them: memory wire, steel, spring wire, and anything hardened. Memory wire is high carbon steel. One cut and the shear edge is chipped, and the cutter will pinch soft wire for the rest of its life.
Memory wire shears
If you make memory wire bracelets or chokers, buy the dedicated shears, around $12 to $20. They are hardened for it and they are the only tool that should touch that material.
The jeweler’s saw
A frame, a blade, and the technique that separates people who make metal jewelry from people who only assemble it. The frame is a simple C shape with a throat depth, usually 2 to 5 inches, and the blade is held under tension with the teeth pointing down toward the handle, because a saw cuts on the down stroke.

Saw blades break for three reasons: not enough tension, twisting the frame mid cut, and pushing on the return stroke. All three are fixable in an afternoon. A loose blade sings a flat dull note when you pluck it; a properly tensioned one pings.
Crimping and connection tools
Every strung piece ends with a connection, and the connection is where pieces come back to you in the mail. Get these right and everything else is decoration.
Crimping pliers
Crimp pliers have two pockets. The first, near the tip, folds the crimp tube into a crescent. The second, near the hinge, rolls the crescent into a round. The two step crimp is the standard, and doing it with flat nose pliers produces a squashed tube with sharp corners that will saw through beading wire. Sizes are not standardized across brands, which is a genuine annoyance. Match the tool to the tube you actually use rather than to a number on the package:

The magical crimper folds the tube into a small round bead that looks like a metal bead rather than a crimp. It costs more and it is unforgiving of the wrong wire diameter. If you only buy one, buy the standard 2 mm version and use 2 mm tubes on .018 wire, which is the combination that fails least often.
The rest of the connection kit
- Crimp covers ($3 to $5 a hundred). Two half beads that close over a crimp with a light squeeze from chain nose pliers, turning it into a finished looking bead. Cheapest upgrade in the craft.
- Cup bur, also sold as a wire rounder ($6 to $12). A small cup shaped bur that spins over a cut wire end and rounds it. Fits a rotary tool or a pin vise.
- Bead reamer ($8 to $15). Diamond coated taper for enlarging or smoothing a bead hole. Use it wet, and use it on glass and stone, never on soft plastic or pearl nacre, which chipping makes worse.
- Bead stopper ($3). A spring clip or a loop of wire that holds beads on the strand while you work the other end. You will lose three before you learn to buy five.
Measuring and layout tools
Measuring is the cheapest category and the one that most improves how finished a piece looks, because symmetry is mostly measurement.

Calipers beat a gauge card on accuracy and cost about the same as a decent card, so if you buy one measuring tool, buy calipers. The card is for people who check fifty spools a day and do not want to open and close jaws each time.
Beading and thread work tools
Thread work uses different tools from wire work, and they are cheap. This whole category is under $60 including light and magnification.
Needles
Beading needles are long, thin, and numbered inversely: the bigger the number, the finer the needle.

Thread, and why it matters more than the needle
Thread is a tool choice, not a supply choice. Nymo is the old standard nylon beading thread, cheap and stretchy, which is a problem: a strung necklace that stretches will show gaps between beads after a month of wear. FireLine is braided gel spun polyethylene, effectively braided fishing line. It does not stretch, it holds a knot, and it is stiff enough to needle without a thread for short lengths. It also cannot be cut with good scissors and stay neat, so you want a thread burner or a very sharp blade to finish it.
Rule of thumb: Nymo or Silamide for soft drape in woven work, FireLine for anything structural, and always condition with beeswax or a thread conditioner so the thread does not fray at the eye.
The rest of the beading bench
- Bead mat ($6 to $10). A slightly tacky or flocked mat that stops beads rolling. A tea towel works for about a week and then you buy the mat.
- Bead scoop ($4). Two curved trays that let you pick beads up off the mat and pour them back into the tube. Saves your back more than your time.
- Tweezers ($6 to $12). Fine tips for placing beads and pulling out mistakes. Anti static coating helps with seed beads, which otherwise cling to the tips.
- Task lamp ($35 to $70). Daylight balanced, around 5000 K to 5500 K, with a CRI of 90 or better. Warm light makes amethyst look brown and makes matching dyed batches impossible.
- Magnification ($25 to $60). Either a clamp lamp with a 3x or 5x lens, or a headband visor. A visor keeps both hands free and does not make you hunch, which is why most people who try both end up with the visor.

Wire work: mandrels, jigs and mallets
Wire wrapping and wire weaving convert flat plans into repeated shapes, and the tools that make that possible are forms: things you wrap wire around so that piece four looks like piece one.

A steel hammer on a steel mandrel mushrooms the mandrel’s end and eventually ruins the size marks. Rawhide and plastic mallets exist so that the mandrel outlives the project.
Chain maille tools
Chain maille is the lightest toolkit in the craft and the most repetitive. You need pliers, and you need a way to hold a lot of rings.
- Two pairs of pliers. Most weavers use two pairs of bent chain nose, or one chain nose and one flat nose. Smooth jaws, because every ring you touch shows the mark.
- A ring holder. A small split ring or a tool made for it that you slide opened rings onto so you can work through a batch in one sitting. Around $8 to $15.
- Cutters that match your wire. Saw cut jump rings do not need cutting. Machine cut rings do, and a flush cutter is what you want.
- A tumbler, eventually. Maille looks dramatically better burnished, and a rotary tumbler with stainless shot does in an hour what hand polishing does in an evening. Around $90 to $160 for a hobby sized barrel.
The one thing that decides whether maille looks good is the aspect ratio of the rings: inner diameter divided by wire diameter. The metalsmithing bench
This is where the money goes. Everything above this line can happen at a kitchen table. Soldering needs a surface that does not burn, a flame, and ventilation.

Two safety items that are not optional. Eye protection, because a broken saw blade or a popped pickle bubble goes for the eye every time. And ventilation: soldering fumes and pickle vapor both need moving air. An open window is the floor, not the target. Keep a box of baking soda next to the pickle to neutralize spills, and never put steel tweezers in it, since the iron plates copper onto your work.
Stone setting tools
Stone setting is a small toolkit attached to a large skill. You can buy every tool below for under $120 and still need forty hours of practice before you would sell a bezel set pendant.

Setting burs are the part people underbuy. A hart bur cuts a flat bottomed seat for a flat backed cabochon, a bud bur cuts a rounded seat, and an inverted cone does rough removal. Buying one bur and trying to make it do all three is the usual reason a stone sits crooked.
Finishing: files, sandpaper and polish
Finishing is not a step at the end. It is half the work, and it is where the difference between handmade and homemade lives.
The sequence is always the same: remove material with a file, refine with progressively finer abrasive, then polish. Skipping a grit does not save time, because the coarser scratches simply reappear under the polish.

A rotary tumbler with stainless steel shot and a little burnishing soap is the shortcut, and it is the best $120 a production beader can spend. Tumbling work hardens the metal slightly, brightens it evenly, and reaches places a cloth never will. It will also ruin anything with a soft stone in it, so set stones after tumbling, not before.
Power tools: rotary against flex shaft
The choice here is simpler than the forums make it, and it comes down to how many hours a week the tool runs.

The useful number buried in that table is the low end of the speed range. Engraving and stone setting happen around 8,000 to 12,000 rpm. Plenty of cheap rotary tools start at 15,000, which means they cannot do the work slowly enough to control it. If a tool’s specification does not list a minimum speed below 10,000, it is a grinder, not a jeweler’s tool.
Workspace: bench, light, magnification
None of this is glamorous and all of it changes what you can make, because fine work is a posture problem before it is a skill problem.
Bench height
A jewelry bench sits higher than a desk, generally 35 to 39 inches, so that your elbows rest near 90 degrees while your hands are up at the work. If you are hunched, your bench is too low. If your shoulders are up by your ears, it is too high. A standard 29 inch dining table plus a firm cushion under your chair is a workable starting point, and a foot rail matters more than people expect, because it lets you shift without standing up.
A semi circular cutout at the front edge lets you get your body close to the work, and a lip or catch tray around the edge stops findings from reaching the floor. Metal filings and silver dust are worth money, and a sweep tray plus a small brush keeps them out of the vacuum and in a jar.
Light
Two numbers matter. Color temperature around 5000 K to 5500 K, which is close to daylight and lets you judge color accurately. And a color rendering index of 90 or above, which is how faithfully the light shows the actual hue. A cheap 4000 K lamp at CRI 70 will make two shades of green aventurine look identical, and you will discover the difference in daylight after you have shipped the order.
Magnification
3x to 5x covers almost all bench work. Beyond about 5x the working distance gets so short that your tools stop fitting between the lens and the piece. A headband visor in the 2.5x to 3.5x range keeps both hands free and does not force you to lean, and leaning is what makes your neck hurt for two days afterward.
Storage that saves you money
Organization is a cost control measure. The most common way people waste money in this craft is buying a bead they already own because they could not find it.
- Store by size, not by color. You search for 6 mm round, not for green. A label maker costs $25 and pays for itself fast.
- Keep findings separated by metal. Silver plated jump rings mixed into a sterling batch will end up on a piece you describe as sterling, and that is a problem you cannot see until the plating wears.
- Use shallow drawers for tools in reach, deep drawers for stock. Anything you reach past another object for, you stop using.
- Save the sweepings. A lidded jar for filings and a separate one for scrap. Refiners pay on weight, and sterling scrap adds up faster than people think.
Three kit builds at three budgets
These are the jewelry making tools I would actually buy, itemized by kit rather than by category, because nobody shops for a category. Prices are mid tier, US retail, 2026.

Bar width is scaled to the largest category. Hand tools are just under half the spend.
If you already own pliers, that total drops to about $84, since the cutters, crimpers and layout tools are the rest. It also teaches the wrong lesson, because the first tools you own are the ones your hands learn on.

Two things worth noticing in those numbers. The jump from wire work to metal work is more than the cost of everything before it, and almost all of that jump is heat: a torch, a surface that does not burn, and the ventilation to go with them. The other is that $149 buys you a bench that can finish and ship real jewelry. Nothing above that line is required to start selling.
Buy cheap or buy once
The honest answer to “should I buy the expensive one” is that it depends on the tool, and the way to work it out is cost per year rather than sticker price. Below is what the arithmetic looks like using typical lifespans.
Annual cost by tier
Price divided by realistic service life. Lower bars are better value.
Read the flex shaft rows carefully, because they are the interesting ones. On hand tools, mid tier wins outright. On power tools, the $438 Foredom only becomes cheaper per year than a $90 Dremel if you use it for twenty years, and a Dremel will not last twenty years of daily use. So the premium option wins only at production volume, where the difference is torque and control rather than durability. Buying a Foredom for two hours of weekend work is not an upgrade, it is a slower way to spend money.
Where premium really does pay: anything with a cutting edge or a precision ground jaw, used daily. Where it does not: mandrels, bench blocks, hammers, tumblers and trays. A $30 steel block and a $90 block do the same job.
Nine tools people buy and never use
Every one of these is a real tool that somebody needs. Almost nobody needs it in year one, which is why they are the most returned and most resold jewelry making tools on any marketplace.
- The 46 piece starter kit. You want five of the pieces. The rest is padding, and the padding is where the quality went.
- A bead spinner. Wonderful if you are making thousands of seed bead strands. A $40 paperweight if you are making twenty.
- A tumbler before you have volume. It shines forty pieces at once. Shine your first ten by hand and see if you still want one in month three.
- A ring clamp before you make rings. It holds a ring for setting and engraving. Most beginners who own one have never made a ring.
- A torch before you can saw. Soldering is fitting first and heat second. If you cannot make two pieces of metal meet flush, a torch just melts things.
- An ultrasonic cleaner as a first purchase. It cleans finished jewelry beautifully and does nothing for the scratches you actually needed to remove.
- A drill press. A handheld rotary tool in a stand does the same job at a hobby volume for a fifth of the price.
- Steps and dies, or a rolling mill. Buy these when you are Making Your Own Bezel Wire, capital letters intentional, and not before.
- Three gauges of every wire. Pick 20 gauge half hard and 24 gauge dead soft. When a project needs something else, buy that one spool. Most abandoned stashes are four nearly identical spools bought in one optimistic order.

One habit covers most of it: wipe your tools down at the end of a session. Skin oil and polishing dust together are what corrode jaws and freeze joints, and thirty seconds with a rag prevents most of it.
Where to buy: retail, wholesale, suppliers
Tools you buy once. Beads you buy forever, and that is where the buying decision actually matters.
Buy tools from a jewelry supply specialist rather than a general marketplace. The prices on a marketplace look better and the jaw alignment is a lottery, and you cannot tell from a photograph whether a cutter’s blades meet. If you are shopping online, the review detail worth searching for is not “good quality,” it is whether the jaws meet flush and whether the spring still works after a year. The same applies to jewelry making supplies in general: consumables like beading wire, crimp tubes and thread are worth buying from a seller who publishes specifications, because the specification is the thing you are actually paying for.
On beads, the decision point is repetition. Until you have made the same design three times, buy retail and buy small. After that the arithmetic changes, and buying wholesale beads stops being a risk and starts being the obvious move.

A good bead supplier is a boring one. They answer in writing, they publish hole sizes, and the strand you reorder in March matches the one you bought in January. That predictability is worth more than a lower price from a bead supplier who cannot tell you what is in the bag.
Once you have a design you make repeatedly, wholesale beads drop the unit cost substantially, usually to somewhere between a third and a half of per bead retail, with quantity breaks starting around five strands. Constantly while you are learning, then rarely. Expect to lose several in the first month and budget for a gross of blades. Almost every break is low tension, a twisted frame, or pressure on the return stroke.
Is a tumbler worth it?
If you make more than about thirty pieces a month, yes. Stainless shot burnishes evenly, work hardens the metal slightly, and reaches inside links and tight wraps that a cloth never touches. Set stones after tumbling, since soft stones will be damaged by it.
